I lifted the lid of my console piano for the first time (I was curious) and noticed that there are no dampers on the high treble strings. Why is this so?
Strings in the higher treble area of a piano are very short. When being played, they do not naturally ring for any significant duration. Therefore, dampers are not required. Actually, if they had dampers, it’s likely that you would just barely hear them when played, if at all.
